An overview of some of the volunteer roles that go into each race.

General

Roles where it's easier to pitch in and no prior experience is necessary.

Registration

Sign in arriving participants, ensure they have paid and signed a waiver, distribute wristbands and registration packets.

Grid Control

Ensure the false grid is ready to go in the pits while the previous session is running. Ensure racers and karts are correctly registered and their transponder installed. Control access to the track during practice session.

Grid Access

Control access to restricted areas (check for wristbands), ensure karts have transponders installed when needed, ensure participants are showing up for the right session.

Corner Marshal

Signal cautions (yellow flag) and stops (red flag) to racers, signal blue for slower racers who should allow an overtake or are being lapped, communicate with the Race Director about observed incidents or poor driving standards. Stay behind barriers and off the track even if a kart comes off.

Kart Recovery

Drive the recovery golf cart to remove stuck or disabled karts from the track between sessions. May shuttle marshals to and from stations for breaks, relief, or lunch.

Scales Operator

Weighs each kart + driver and records pass or fail. Kart + driver must meet a minimum weight for the class. Karts must come to a full stop before the scales with engine shut off and roll onto the scales - driving onto the scales can shock the system.

Technical Inspector Assistant

Assists Technical Inspector with inspecting karts. May apply paint to karts as instructed to "lock in" inspected configuration - this is a tamper-evident mechanism used to discourage unauthorized modifications.

Specialized

More technical roles that require more experience, training, or commitment.

Race Director

Like a movie director, runs the show. The senior official making all of the on-track and off-track decisions on race day. Handling incidents, penalties, coaching drivers about driving standards, coordinating marshals, volunteers, and first responders to ensure safety.

Starter

Positioned at the finish line. Throws the green flag if the grid is correctly formed for the rolling start or aborts and sends them around. Flags the halfway point, the final lap, and the checkered flag. Works closely with the race director.

Timing

Operate the timing system, ensuring all karts have working transponders, correctly recording race results, and applying penalties in coordination with the Race Director.

Technical Inspector

Enforces different technical standards (often the regulations side of rules and regulations) to ensure fair competition. Inspects vehicles and engines to ensure different metrics are within standard, whether fuel testing, safety (e.g. lock wires), tire setup (track width), engine (security seals intact), or carburetor (needle length).

Board Member

Operate the Club itself, arrange insurance, track rental, first aid coverage, volunteers, communications, registration with governing bodies, annual banquet - lots of behind-the-scenes work year-round.
